From November 11th to 16th, 2016, the 9th international symposium on AMP-activated protein kinase— New Mechanisms and Physiology was held in Xiamen Aqua Resort. The meeting was jointly organized by the School of Life Sciences of Xiamen University, University of Dundee and the Imperial College London. It is the first time the symposium has been held in China.

The meeting invited professor Michael Hall, the Swiss academy of sciences and the winner of Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, and professor Lewis Cantley, the American academy of sciences and the Wolf Prize winner as keynote speakers. Professor Grahame Hardie from the University of Dundee, professor David Carling from the Imperial College London and other 24 international experts in related fields were invited to deliver reports as speakers.The conference focused on the AMPK Structure and regulation, nutrient sensing, AMPK function in vivo, AMPK and metabolism, Physiological roles in different tissues, Crosstalk with other pathways, AMPK and cancer and other topics.

The AMPK is playing an important role in metabolic regulation, and also is the target of many metabolic diseases and their therapeutic drugs such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease. The AMPK has attracted more and more attentions, and over 150 representatives from universities and research institutions in many countries and regions including the United States, France, Britain, Canada, Hong Kong, etc., attended the meeting.

The symposium aims at promoting the academic exchange between AMPK experts and scholars at home and abroad, expanding the international popularity of domestic scholars, and promoting the substantive exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and foreign scholars.

The AMPK 2016 was also the 7th Xiamen Winter Symposium which has successfully organized for six years. It provides opportunity for domestic researchers to communicate and exchange views with the well-known scientists, including Nobel Laureates and Academic Fellows around the world.
